Spring time and the living is easy …. No wait! That doesn’t sound quite right. Summer time and the living is easy. Yes, that’s the song I had in mind. Now that spring is in the air and warm weather is on the way (well, it seems that Cape Town is a bit confused as we’re having a mini winter spell right now), it’s definitely cocktail time! For me, anytime is cocktail time but there’s just something about sipping on a cool cocktail on a warm, sunshiny day … Ooops! Sorry, got a bit stuck there daydreaming about lying in a hammock on a tropical island with a delicious Piña Colada in hand …

So, back to cool cocktails! We discovered this really vibey spot on Sunday Funday, The Salt Yard, in Little Mowbray. Recently opened for business, it’s clear to see they already have their regulars and no doubt will gain a loyal following in no time.

The décor is retro and quirky, with Venetian carnival masks and vintage style picture licence plates adorning the walls. Tables and chairs of various shapes and sizes are dotted around the non-smoking restaurant and the smokers bar next door. Phillip and Matt, the friendly owners along with their team, were making sure everyone had what they needed. These guys know their stuff and how to keep their customers happy.

We enjoyed classic cocktails like the Caipirinhia, the Ama-zing Strawberry Daiquiri and Wicked Piña Colada (both served in huge glass mugs), complete with a tincture of tequila on the side!

The Chocolate Milktart was really delish – basically a liquid version of milktart laced with vodka. The wow factor prize goes to the Candyfloss Martini. Served with a bright blueish green puff of candyfloss, you pour the alcoholic liquid over the floss which melts and then you drink!

I’d love to go back for some more cocktails and to try the food. The menu has everything from breakfasts, sandwiches and starters to salads, pizzas, pastas and burgers. Oh my! Those burgers were enormous with generous toppings and looked oh so delicious as they made their way to various tables.
Is it kid friendly? Kids are welcome but there isn’t really much for them to do other then sit and eat. We had our brood in tow that afternoon and after a short time spent on various screens, eating curly fries (these are so yum!) and having milkshakes, they were bored and ready to go home.
So our next visit will be sans kids and a fun night out for the adults. It’s advisable to book a table for Friday and Saturday nights as these are their busiest. And the best thing? It’s about 5 minutes from our place so this cool spot just may become a regular hangout. Go check it out and let me know what you think.
