Since my first review of this lovely local eatery in September 2016, Saltwater Grill has continued to grow in popularity with locals and visitors alike. I’ve read patron reviews where they’ve travelled from Stellenbosch and further afield just to have dinner. Many locals make sure they bring their overseas visitors to enjoy the creative culinary delights of this seafood bistro situated in the garden city suburb of Pinelands.

Saltwater Grill opened for business on 15 November 2015 so it’s a relatively new kid on the foodie block. Being featured in the Sunday Times issue about one year later (17 November 2016), alongside Pinelands stalwart Magica Roma and Texan barbeque restaurant Hoghouse Brewery, is no mean feat and something that Dylan Paioni, the young owner, and his staff should be very proud of. It just shows that a lot of passion, perseverance, excellent quality and damn hard work pays off in the end.
I’m lucky enough to live in Pinelands and consider myself a loyal supporter of Saltwater Grill. I can honestly say that they just keep getting better and better. I even remarked on it to Dylan and my friend while we were there a few weeks back. The Deep Fried Tender Calamari Rings have been a favourite of mine since my first visit and they’ve always been cooked to perfection. Somehow, on this day, they were even better than perfect … if that’s even possible!
My friend and I both decided on the Fresh Cape Hake – I chose mine grilled and drizzled with a Fresh Herb Sauce while she had hers grilled with Real Lemon Butter. The portion is very generous and oh-so-yummy. Both are served with their Signature Tartare sauce. As for sides, we both chose the sautéed vegetables. Now I usually go for the fresh, tasty, pretty-as-a-picture salad as my side, but I’m so happy that I chose the vegetables this time. Don’t for a second think that these are your bog-standard, bland and over-cooked veggies that you get in some places. The brocolli, roasted rosa tomatoes, spinach and thinly sliced carrots and courgettes were beautifully prepared and incredibly tasty – a real winner in my eyes!
If you’re not into counting carbs, then definitely go for the fresh hand cut chips. You’ll be so happy you did. They are incredibly more-ish – perfectly crisp on the outside while the centre is soft and melts in your mouth. Definitely the best I’ve tasted in Cape Town. The wine list is quite extensive with some great options. Should you choose to bring your own wine, then corkage is R30 per bottle.
They’ve recently undergone a soft refurb and the fresh, funky decor and new lick of paint has improved the overall look and feel of the restaurant. Fresh flowers on each table are a nice touch. If you’ve been here before, you’ll notice the changes immediately. There are also some new additions to the menu, such as the tantalizing Tuna Tataki. How divine does that look? I’m definitely having that next time.

If you’ve wanted to try this little gem but have been dragging your feet for some or other reason, then here are my top 3 reasons why you should go to Saltwater Grill and not delay it any longer.
- A hands-on approach – Dylan, the founder and owner, has a very hands-on approach and his passion shines through with beautifully plated dishes. It’s like art on a plate and the salads are decorated with the prettiest edible flowers. Working at île de païn in Knysna taught him the art of perfection and he doesn’t compromise on this. He warmly welcomes each and every customer and if he’s in the kitchen at the time you arrive, he’ll be sure to stop by your table to say hi and recommend a few dishes.
- THE FOOD! The main attraction is the food and when it’s this good, it’s not hard to see why this place has gained a very loyal following. You’ll find good old fish and chips on the menu. But if you want something a little different, there are some inventive options and not just for seafood lovers. The homemade beef burgers and steaks will keep most die-hard carnivores very happy. Dylan makes his own fresh pasta daily. Everything they serve is simply delicious, fresh and beautifully presented with generous portions. It’ll have anyone coming back for more. Dylan only uses sustainable fresh fish and seafood from local suppliers and will advise you if the product has been sourced elsewhere. Daily chalkboard specials are on offer too.
- Friendly service and warm hospitality – Another thing that Dylan has achieved is training his staff and training them well. You’ll often hear moans and groans about the service levels in Cape Town, but you won’t find any issues here. The waitrons are friendly, knowledgeable and efficient and often help each other out, especially during busy times. Dylan also lends a helping hand where needed. Regulars are greeted warmly and treated more like friends then customers. First timers receive the same friendly hospitality.
So now that you’ve read my top 3 reasons on why you must get yourself to Saltwater Grill (there are loads more!), what are you waiting for? Make a booking now and find out what all the fuss is about. And yes, bookings are essential, especially on busy evenings and weekends.
I’d love to hear about your experience at this neighbourhood gem so let me know once you’ve been. If you’re going in a large group, order a few starters to share so you get to taste little bits of yumminess while you decide on your mains.
Please note – all meals were paid for by me.
My Capetown itinerary is growing at the rate of your posts. I can’t wait to try Saltwater Grill!
I’m happy to hear that Shona! So much to see and do and Saltwater Grill is a must on your ever growing list 😉
